The first map of the 2009-10 European season comes to us from regular Albion Road contributor Bill Turianski, focusing on the German Bundesliga. Several of Bill's regular features are included here including a few new ones. On the right we've got Bill's attendance map - the emblems of all 18 clubs by location and sized proportional to their attendance. Considering the attendance power of the German game (consistently the highest average crowds in Europe) this map needs to be pretty huge!

A couple of things that stick out to me - first is the complete lack of clubs from the former East Germany. While Hertha Berlin are located in the eastern part of the country their roots are in West Berlin. Clearly the economy of the East continues to lag far behind.

Second is the incredible density of clubs in the center west of the country, the Ruhr region of Germany. Six of the 18 clubs are from the area, in particular Dortmund, Schalke and Bochum, the three of them no further than about 20 km apart. And adding to that Dortmund and Schalke have two of the highest average gates in the league.

Besides the map, Bill has a list of this season's European qualifiers, details of last season's average crowds and a table of all the Bundesliga titles over the years, a list dominated utterly by Bayern Munich whose 20 titles are four times second place Borussia Mönchengladbach.
