The strength in depth of English football is unparalled. No other country can claim the level of crowd support English football gets all the way down the pyramid. This map, the latest contribution from Bill Turianski, is a great example. It charts every English football club with an average crowd of 4000 or more in the 2008-09 season - an incredible 77 clubs. We go from Manchester United (75,304) to Yeovil Town (4,423). 76 of the 77 clubs were in the Premiership or a division of the Football League. Oxford United were the top drawing club in non-league football, pulling in 4879 fans per game - better than 22 clubs in the Football League.

The map displays the logo of each club with each one sized proportional to population. It also provides some interesting insight into where football is most popular in England and, I guess, where the country's population is most heavily centered.

There is also a chart listing the club's attendance in 2008-09, league standing and their rise and fall from the previous season. As you'd expect the biggest gainers are promoted clubs (like Stoke City's crowd leaping by 60% when they joined the Premiership) and the biggest losers are the relegated ones (Birmingham City's 27% fall after their 2007-08 relegation).
