Banfield win Apertura in Argentina

CA BanfieldClub Atlético Banfield won the 2009 Apertura title in Argentina's Primera División, the first ever national championship for the green and white club from the south of Buenos Aires. Despite losing their final match 2-0 at Boca Juniors, Banfield clinched the title when challengers Newell's Old Boys also lost, 2-0 at home to San Lorenzo.

 

The Argentine Primera División calendar is divided into two distinct championships per season - the Apertura (Opening) and Clausura (Closing). Each team plays every other team in the division once each season.

 

River Plate top the all-time title list in Argentina with 34, just five ahead of eternal rivals Boca Juniors.
