Derry City FC logoDerry City FC were expelled from the League of Ireland after the club admitted making under-the-table payments to certain players and staff to get around league budget regulations. The League of Ireland has licensing regulations that limit wages to 65% of the club's income. These extra payments exceeded that limit.

As a result of Derry City's expulsion Galway United will not be relegated from the Premier Division and Bray Wanderers (who were to be automatically relegated) will go into a playoff with Drogheda United to determine who will enter a further playoff with the 2nd placed clubs from the First Division for a spot in next season's Premier Division.

It's unclear yet what the future holds for Derry City or football in the city. Derry City FC may continue at a lower division or may fold and a brand-new club may be created, to compete in the lower divisions of the League of Ireland or even in the Irish League.

In Derry City's 81 years of existence they competed in two leagues (Northern Ireland Irish League and the Republic of Ireland's League of Ireland) and won a total of 19 major trophies.

League Titles:

  • Irish League (1965)
  • League of Ireland (1989, 97)

Cup Titles:

  • Irish Cup (1949, 54, 64)
  • FAI Cup (1989, 95, 2003, 06)
  • League of Ireland Cup (1989, 91, 92, 94, 2000, 05, 06, 07, 08)
