The next in our series of football maps is the 2008-09 season of Ligue 1, the top tier of French football. Brought to us as always by Bill Turianski, we've got a map of the country on the left with each club logo in the appropriate location and sized proportional to average attendance. On the right we have snapshots of each team - logo, home jersey, stadium and a quick review of their successes over the years. And for good measure in the bottom left we've got an attendance table. Tres tres bien!

A few things jump out at me:

  • How does a club with the 4th-best attendance in the league get themselves relegated? No really sure but somehow Lens managed that feat in 2007-08. It's a tragedy if nothing else for the loss of one of the league's great nicknames - Les Sang et Or. The Blood and Gold.
  • In terms of the teams in the 2008-09 Ligue 1, Marseille, PSG and Lyon tower above the rest from an attendance perspective. And it's a funny triangle the three clubs make. Marseille and PSG have heavily underachieved in recent years and the two clubs play out the country's fiercest derby twice a year. Meanwhile Lyon just keep purring along, racking up the titles. Can they make it eight straight this season?
  • There's a great big hole in central France with not a single Ligue 1 club. Is it a lack of big cities? Maybe that is rugby country?
  • I love the emblem of Lorient. Completely quirky.
  • Some really gorgeous uniforms in the French Ligue 1. Really vibrant colors and across the board as good as any league going. Might need to get Mr. Kit Aesthetics to weigh on that one.
