Description:

Real Betis Balompié was launched on December 8, 1914 by the merger of Sevilla Balompié and Betis FC. The honorary Real title was given at the time of its foundation. The foundation date is disputed and is sometimes given as 1907, the foundation year of Sevilla Balompié. Betis is derived from Baetica, the Roman name for Andalusia, the region of which Seville is the principal city. This is also the origin of the nickname Béticos. Betis were forced to drop the Real aspect of the club name during the Spanish Civil War as Andalusia was under control of the Spanish Republic. Among their other nicknames, the Verdiblancos means The Green and White while the Verderones means The Big Green. A pepino is a cucumber and its green color makes it an obvious choice for a Real Betis nickname. The green and white colors are taken from the flag of Andalusia. The emblem of the Béticos includes a pair of Bs (for Betis Balompié), a crown symbolizing their royal patronage and a triangular green and white flag. Matches with arch-rival Sevilla are known as the Derbi Sevillano and is one of the hottest in Spain.

Estadio Manuel Ruíz de Lopera:

The stadium is named for the current club president and was previously known as Heliopolis and Benito Villamarín.

Previous stadiums: Prado de San Sebastián (1914-20), Real Patronato Obrero (1920-29).
