Formed on March 15, 1908 as Sporting Club Lecce and included athletics, cycling and football departments. Suspended operations in 1924 and reformed in 1927 as a merger of two local Lecce clubs - Juventus and Gladiator. They again ceased activity in 1932, not be restarted for another four years. Lecce hold the unfortunate record for the fewest points ever recorded in a Serie A season - 11 in the 1992-93 season. The nickname Salentini is a reference to Lecce's location in the region of Salento, on the southeastern tip of Italy. The club's emblem includes the coat of arms of the city of Lecce and the red and yellow colors are the primary colors of the province of Lecce. They were adopted in 1928, replacing the original black and white vertical stripes.
