1. FC Kaiserslautern were created on June 2, 1900 as FC 1900 Kaiserslautern after the merger of Germania 1896 and Fußballgesellschaft 1899. Merged with Palatia and Bavaria 1902 into FV Kaiserslautern in 1909. A further merger, with SV Phönix in 1929, and then a final name change in 1931 into 1. FC Kaiserslautern. The nickname Die roten Teufel means The Red Devils, a reference to the club's colors. In 1997-98, Kaiserslautern became the first (and so far only) club to win the title immediately after being promoted. Kaiserslautern is also the smallest city in Germany ever to have had a Bundesliga champion.

Fritz-Walter-Stadion - Der Betzenberg:

Der Betzenberg, the stadium's nickname, is a hill upon which the stadium is located. The stadium is officially named for the legendary German player, Fritz Walter, a Kaiserslautern icon.
