Founded on January 6, 1911 as a merger of three clubs - Lezica, San Martin Juniors and Jubile. Almagro is a neighborhood of Buenos Aires where the club was originally based. The tricolor nickname is a reference to the club's three colors - black, blue and white.

Although the club's headquarters are still in the Almagro neighborhood the club now play at a stadium in the district of 3 de Febrero in Buenos Aires province, just west of the city proper. Previous Stadiums: Parque Centenario (1921-27), Parque Chas (1927-37).
