The Clube de Regatas Botafogo was founded in 1894 while Botafogo Football Club was founded in 1904. The two clubs merged in 1942, after a basketball game between the two in which a player died. The clubs merged in his honor and adopted a merged name - Botafogo Futebol e Regatas. Botafogo is a neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro, and literally translates to 'set-fire'. The Lone Star in Botafogo's emblem and nickname is a reference to the 'Estrela D'Alva', the first star in the night sky - actually the planet Venus.
