Description:

Founded by members of Dundee's Irish Catholic community, to replace Dundee Harp which had disappeared three years earlier. The name was changed from Dundee Hibernian to Dundee United in an effort to attract a wider audience outside of the Irish community. The Terrors nickname was given after a 1949 cup victory over Celtic. Dundee United supporters are known as Arabs - in the early 60s, the club were forced to play a few matches on a sand-covered field, the club did quite well in those matches and the nickname was applied, initially to the club then to the fans. In 1967 the club played a summer season in the North American Soccer League and used an orange jersey, which they subsequently adopted as their official colors. Dundee United reached the 1987 UEFA Cup final, their best-ever season in Europe.
