Formed from a previous club called Hammarby Roddförening (Hammarby Rowing Club). The Hammarby IF name translates as Hammarby Sports Association. Although the club as a whole was launched in 1897, the football section did not begin until a 1915 merger with Klara SK. In 1918 they again were part of a merger, this time with Johanneshovs IF. Hammarby is a neighborhood of Stockholm. Traditionally supported by the working class of southern Stockholm. The Bajen nickname is a mock-English mispronunciation of Hammarby.
