Description:

Created from the 1988 merger of  Winterslag with rivals Waterschei Thor. Koninklijke (Royal) is an honorary title given by the Belgian royal family to every club in Belgium after twenty-five years of existence. Although the current club has only existed since 1988, they have kept the matricule of Winterslag which goes back to 1923. Now considered one of the big four clubs of Belgium, along with Anderlecht, Club Brugge and Standard. Winsterslag: FC Winterslag (1923-58), KFC Winterslag (1958-88). Waterschei Thor: Waterschei's Sport Vereeniging Thor (1919-30), Waterschei Sport Vereeniging Thor (1930-46), Waterschei Sportvereniging Thor (1946-51), K. Waterschei SV Thor (1951-62), K. Waterschei SV Thor Genk (1962-88). Waterschei won two cups. Waterschei and Winterslag were coal mines and both clubs were formed by local miners. The Limburg province (where Genk is located) was the heart of Belgium's mining industry. Thor is an acronym for Tot Herstel Onzer Rechten (To Recover Our Rights). The stadium was previously known as the Fenix Stadion but is now called the Cristal Arena after title sponsor Cristal, a Belgian brewer. Matricule #322.
