The Potters nickname used by Stoke City is a reference to the long-important pottery industry in the city and the region surrounding Stoke-on-Trent is sometimes referred to as The Potteries. Although 1863 is generally accepted as the club's foundation date, entry into the historical record doesn't actually arrive until 1868. Stoke Ramblers merged with Stoke Victoria Cricket Club in 1878, resulting in a change of name to Stoke FC. The club were founder members of the Football League in 1888. The Potters went bankrupt in 1908 and were officially reformed under the same name. In 1925 the city of Stoke-on-Trent was granted city status and soon after the club changed its name for the final time, to Stoke City. In the 1960s Stoke City played one season in the US as the Cleveland Stokers. At the time one of the competing American professional soccer leagues were importing foreign clubs wholesale for summer seasons.
