The club was formed by members of the Sheffield United cricket club, itself formed in 1854 and the first English sports club to use 'United' in its name. The Blades joined the Football League in 1892 after one season each in the Midland League and Northern League. The Blades nickname is a reference to Sheffield's long history of steel manufacturing. In earlier years United were known as the Junior Blades, with Sheffield Wednesday being considered the more senior club in Sheffield and using the same nickname. They also were sometimes known as The Cutlers, a reference to the once important cutlery industry in the city. The club's emblem features two blades (a reference to the nickname) and the Yorkshire rose, symbol of the county in which Sheffield is located.

Bramall Lane:

Their Bramall Lane stadium was the scene of the first-ever floodlit match in 1878, although they did not become a regular fixture at the ground for another 70 years. The stadium is located on Bramall Lane in Sheffield.
