Description: The full name of GIF Sundsvall translates as Gymnastics and Sports Association Sundsvall. It was founded on August 25, 1903 at the Matilda Andersson Café as the Godtemplarnas Idrotts Förening Sundsvall. Godtemplarnas was a temperance organization and the club was founded with this as a founding principle. In 1920 Sweden's very strict temperance laws were relaxed and the club's name and focus changed to a more general all-sports approach. They previously had several different sports under the club's wing but it's now strictly focused on football.
The stadium was long known as the Idrottsparken (Sports Park) but now bears the name of title sponsor Norrporten, a property development company based in Sundsvall. The club's emblem features an Olympic wreath, as do the rest of Sweden's loosely affiliated IF clubs. The nickname Gifarna simply means something like "The GIFs".
