Description:

The Sunderland & District Teachers Association football side was formed by a group of teachers at the Hendon Boarding School. After a year the club allowed non-teachers to join and changed to the present name of Sunderland Association Football Club. Sunderland were elected to the Football League in 1890. They played at five different grounds over their first two decades before settling at Roker Park in the Roker neighborhood in North Sunderland. Their longtime nickname of the Rokermen was a reference to that stadium. They're also commonly known as the Black Cats, an historic nickname steeped in Sunderland lore - a group of soldiers once heard a mysterious wailing black cat near a gun battery in the early 19th century. After the departure from Roker Park it has become much more common. Sunderland's elaborate emblem includes - a pithead wheel (symbolic of the region's mining heritage), the club's red and white colors, two famous city symbols (Penshaw Monument and Victorian Wearmouth Bridge) and a pair of lions (also prominent in the city's coat of arms).

Stadium of Light:

The Stadium of Light name was chosen as a tip of the hat to the industrial heritage of the region, specifically the Monkwearmouth mine. A sign at the mine's exit famously read 'Into The Light'. Previous stadiums - Blue House Field (1879-82), Groves Field (1882-83), Horatio Street (1883-84), Abbs Field (1884-86), Newcastle Road (1886-98), Roker Park (1898-1997).
