Details:Association: Federação Portuguesa de Futebol Official Website: fpf.pt Description:Portuguese football is dominated almost exclusively by the big three - Benfica, Porto and Sporting. For a relatively small and middle-income country, Portugal has had a surprising amount of success in European competition - 4 Champions League/European Cup wins, 1 European Cup Winners Cup, and 1 UEFA Cup. Portugal FA Logo:In front of the Portuguese cross are five blue and white shields, an important symbol of Portugal and also visible in the center of the Portuguese flag and Portuguese coat of arms. The blue and white colors date back to Henry of Burgundy, Count of Portugal in the 11th century. The five white dots within each blue shield are known as "bezants", which were a Midieval currency and implies that the owner of the coat of arms had the right to print money (and thus be considered a legitimate nation). The five shields later came to symbolize the five wounds and were also attached to a legendary Portuguese victory at the Battle of Ourique. Portuguese Football Clubs Map |
