Soccer is a linguistic corruption of Association Football, the 'official' name of the game. Team names tend to be artificially created, though some have a regional or historical significance. The current professional league, Major League Soccer (MLS), has been active since 1996. Several previous leagues have existed, most importantly the NASL from 1967-1984. Many teams share stadiums with American football teams. The playoffs for the league championship are known as the MLS Cup. The team with the most points at the conclusion of the regular season are awarded the Supporters Shield. American teams (MLS, semi-pro and amateur) also compete for the US Open Cup, surprisingly one of the oldest knockout competitions in the world.
