Description:

Football in Austria developed a technical and tactical side before almost any other country in world, certainly in Europe. The coffee house culture of Vienna produced endless discussion and debate on the game which led to a kind of sophisticated coffee house football. Austria were also pioneers of professional football in continental European football and also a driving force in the Mitropa Cup, a tournament for the best clubs in Central Europe. It can be seen as a precursor to the European Cup. Austria twice reached the World Cup semifinals, first in the 1930s under the guidance of legendary coach Hugo Meisl, and second in the 1950s led by legendary player Ernst Happel. Unfortunately they have had relatively little major success since.

For many years the Austrian league meant the Vienna league. It has only gradually expanded to include the entire country. In terms of titles the league has traditionally been dominated by the two Vienna giants, Austria and Rapid though provincial clubs from Salzburg and Innsbruck have won a number of titles in recent years. The league is sponsored by T-Mobile, a German telecommunications company. The cup is sponsored by Stiegl, an Austrian brewery.
