Brazil are in many ways THE team of international soccer, the sport known throughout the country as Futebol. The Selecão (Selection) as the national team is called are the only team to have appeared in every World Cup and have won the tournament five teams, the most of any country in the world. And beyond simply winning titles Brazil have traditionally played with a unique style and grace and have been led by some of the greatest names in the history of the game - Zico, Garrincha, Rivaldo, Ronaldo and of course Pelé.
The club game has had a sporadic development, influenced by the enormous size of the country. Brazil has only had a national championship since 1971. There were previously only state championships, all of which continue to exist today. They are played in the first third of the year, January to April, and are still somewhat prestigious. The national championship is often called the Brasileirão (The Big Brazilian). It has been converted to a standard league system after years of ever-changing and highly complicated formats. Meanwhile the Copa Brasil seems to be mainly focused on trotting out the big Brazilian clubs to the farthest-flung provincial towns, though it does have the lure of a Copa Libertadores berth to the winner.
