Turkey's record had been surprisingly haphazard before qualifying for the 2002 World Cup and going on to reach the semifinals. On the domestic front a national league wasn't started until the 1950s. There had been regional championships leading to a national final up until that time. Apart from a brief period of success by Trabzonspor in the 70s and early 80s, the domination of Istanbul's Big Three - Galatasaray, Beşiktaş and Fenerbahçe - has been total.
