Aberdeen Football Club was created on April 14, 1903 by the merger of an earlier Aberdeen FC, Victoria United and Orion. Since reaching the top division in 1905-06, Aberdeen have never been relegated - the only club besides Celtic and Rangers to have this honor. They were asked to withdraw for two seasons from 1917-19 due to war-related travel restrictions.
The heyday of Aberdeen were undoubtedly the Alex Ferguson-led days of the late 70s and early 80s when the Dons won three of their four league titles, a handful of cup titles and most impressively the European Cup Winners' Cup.
The Dons nickname may be a reference to the Don river which flows into the North Sea in Aberdeen or a pun on the local pronunciation of "done" which sounds like "deen". Aberdeen FC Ground:The ground of Aberdeen FC is the Pittodrie Stadium, located on Aberdeen's Pittodrie Street and situated just 500m from the North Sea. It was opened in 1899 under the name Pittodrie Park and has been Aberdeen FC's ground since 1903. After significant improvements were made in 1968 the name changed to Pittodrie Stadium
Pittodrie Stadium is the fourth-largest football ground in Scotland, after Celtic Park, Hampden Park and Ibrox Stadium. The Aberdeen FC ground has been at the forefront of a number of innovations in British football grounds. It was the first stadium to incorporate a dugout for managers and substitutes (at the request of then manager Donald Coleman, so that he could see the players' footwork better. In 1979 Pittodrie became only the second all-seater stadium in the UK and the following year became the first stadium with fully-covered seats.
