Full Name: Albacete Balompié City: Albacete Founded: 1940 Stadium: Estadio Carlos Belmonte (17,300) Colors: Maroon, White Previous: Albacete Fútbol Asociación (1940) Nicknames: Alba, Queso Mecánico
Description:
Albacete Fútbol Asociación was formed on August 1, 1940 in the Café Colón of Albacete. Balompié is a literal Spanish translation of 'foot ball' and is sometimes (though rarely) used as an alternative to fútbol as a name for the game. The nickname Queso Mecánico translates as "A Clockwork Cheese". Cheese is one of the region's major exports and during a particularly good run for the club a journalist came up with the clever phrase to describe Albacete. The club adopted colors of white shirts and shorts out of sympathy for Real Madrid and Valencia but also because white was the cheapest color to acquire in those post-Civil War days. The club's emblem mirrors that of the coat of arms of the city of Albacate.
Estadio Carlos Belmonte:
The Carlos Belmonte stadium was built in 1960 and is named for the local mayor at the time of its construction.
