Almería Club de Fútbol began life in 1989. A great number of clubs had come and gone in the city over the years, most importantly Agrupación Deportiva Almería who existed from 1971-82. Almería CF absorbed Club Polideportivo Almería in 2001 and changed names to the present Unión Deportiva Almería - Almería Sports Union.
The club's emblem incorporates the official name, colors, old-style football and most importantly, the indalo. The indalo is a magical symbol found in prehistoric caves near Almería. It is often painted on the doors of houses and buildings in the area to ward off evil. It is the official symbol of the province of Almería.
