Atalanta were formed in October 1907 out of the all-sports club Giovane Orobica. They merged with Società Bergamasca di Ginnastica e Scherma on February 20, 1920 to create Atalanta Bergamasca di Ginnastica e Scherma. The club is named for Atalanta, a goddess of Greek mythology. Indeed one of the club's nicknames, La Dea, means Goddess. The Orobici nickname is a reference to the Orobi, a pre-Roman people who inhabited the region of modern-day Bergamo. The club’s emblem includes the club’s colors of blue and black and a stylized image of the goddess Atalanta. The colors are taken from those of the two founder clubs.

Stadio Atleti Azzuri d'Italia:

The stadium name translates as Blue Athletes of Italy Stadium, blue of course being the nickname given to all Italian national athletic teams. It is part of a large athletic complex in the city. It was built in 1928 and originally known as the Stadio Mario Brumana, a Fascist politician of the day.
