Description:

Riverside Football Club was formed as an off-season sporting pursuit by members of the Riverside Cricket Club. Riverside FC absorbed Riverside Albion in 1902. Riverside is a neighborhood of Cardiff, just west of the city center. Matches in those early years were played at Sophia Gardens, just north of Riverside along the River Taff. Cardiff officially became a city that same year and the club requested a change of name to Cardiff City. It was six years and a move to a stronger league (from the Cardiff & District League to the South Wales Amateur League) before the request was granted and the name change went through. The Bluebirds joined the Southern League and moved to a new stadium - Ninian Park, just east of Riverside - in 1910. Cardiff City joined the Football League in 1920.

Cardiff City remain the only club outside of England to win the FA Cup and also have the highest league finish (second) of any non-English team. The Bluebirds are one of a handful of Welsh clubs who play within the English football system. Since 1995 the Welsh FA has not allowed these clubs to compete in the Welsh Cup so for now (and possibly ever) they remain one behind Wrexham in the all-time Welsh Cup titles table. Cardiff City reached the European Cup Winners Cup semifinals in 1968. The Bluebirds nickname refers to the team's blue shirts and indeed a blue bird appears on the club emblem.

Cardiff City Stadium:

Cardiff City began playing in the Cardiff City Stadium in 2009 and share the facility with the Cardiff Blues rugby union team. Their previous stadium, Ninian Park, was named for Lord Ninian Crichton-Stuart, an early benefactor of the club.

Previous stadiums: Sophia Gardens (1899-1910), Ninian Park (1910-2009).

Nice site, but this page needs updating. Cardiff have moved to their new stadium, the Cardiff City Stadium, across the road from Ninian Park
