Chivas USA were formed on August 4, 2004 by Jorge Vergara (owner of Mexican club Guadalajara) and business partner Antonio Cue (who serves as club president). Chivas USA, located in the Greater Los Angeles area, were formed in an effort to tap into the Mexican team’s fervent fan base in the US in general and the Los Angeles area in particular. They began MLS play in 2005. The Mexican club are commonly known by the nickname Chivas (Goats), which has its origin in a disparaging newspaper article from the 1940s. The team's official name – Club Deportivo Chivas USA – translates as Chivas USA Sports Club and mirrors the Mexican original.
Matches with city rival LA Galaxy are known as the Super Clasico.
