Full Name: Derry City Football Club City: Derry, Northern Ireland Founded: 1928 Stadium: Brandywell Stadium (7700) Colors: Black, Red, White Nickname: Candystripes
Description:
Derry City FC played in the league of Northern Ireland (the Irish League) from 1928 until they resigned from it in 1972. The story of how they left the Irish League is extremely complex; but in short, Derry City suffered from the wider sectarian tensions that erupted in Northern Ireland in the early 1970s. The club did not play senior football again until 1985, when the league of the Republic of Ireland (the League of Ireland) was reorganized. The new two-tier structure introduced senior football to many towns around the country which had not had it before. Derry City FC were included in this expansion and have enjoyed success ever since. Their most successful year was in 1989 when they won all three domestic trophies (the League Championship, the FAI Cup, and the League Cup). The nickname ‘The Candystripes’ refers to the red and white stripes of the home shirt. Derry City FC also won 1 title and 2 cups during their years playing in Northern Ireland. The Candystripes have never been relegated because of results on the field, in Ireland or in their time in Northern Ireland. However they were relegated to the second tier of Irish football for the 2010 season because of financial irregularities.
