Description:

Dungannon Swifts, from the town of Dungannon in County Tyrone, take their name from the swift, a bird common to the region. The swift is featured in the club's emblem.

Swifts began play at the intermediate level in 1949 in the Mid-Ulster League. Football in Northern Ireland has a distinction between senior football and intermediate football, with no promotion/relegation between the two levels although clubs do sometimes move up or down. Intermediate football is somewhat similar to junior football in Scotland and non-league football in England. In 1972 Dungannon Swifts joined the Irish League B Division, which consisted of reserve teams from the Irish League as well as a handful of intermediate clubs like Dungannon Swifts but had no automatic promotion to the Irish League First Division.

In 1997 Dungannon Swifts joined the (second-tier) Irish League First Division, gaining senior status in the process. The Swifts won promotion to the top division in 2003 by virtue of winning the Irish League First Division, their first league title in senior football.

Swifts have had great success in the plethora of cup competitions on offer to clubs in Northern Ireland.
