Description:

FC Volendam hail from a small fishing town in the province of North Holland, 30 minutes and an entire planet away from Amsterdam. It is a relatively popular tourist destination for the Dutch, with its charming stretch of seaside, locals still dressed in traditional costume, a lively music scene and a remarkably good football team. This little town can be mighty proud of Het Andere Oranje (the Other Orange), who can claim six second division titles, two Dutch Cup final appearances and a history of producing technically skilled players who've gone on to bigger and better things.

History:

The club was founded in 1920 by local fishermen under the name Victoria. Three years later the name was changed to RKSV (Rooms Katholieke Sport Vereniging) Volendam - Roman Catholic Sports Club of Volendam and quickly joined the Dutch Catholic Football Association. The club won two Catholic Football Association titles (1935 and 1938) before the Catholic Association was wound up during the Nazi occupation of World War II and rolled into the mainstream Dutch football association (the KNVB).

After the war Volendam decided to remain in the KNVB, turned professional in 1955, reached a Dutch Cup final in 1958 (losing 4-3 to Sparta Rotterdam) and reached the Eredivisie for the first time in the 1959-60 season. They were immediately relegated, the first in a long series of ups and downs that has given the club the reputation of an "elevator" club. This reputation has become such a part of the club's lore that the town even built a ship to be used for the players to tour around in and celebrate promotions. The boat's name is the Heen en Weer - There and Back and this is also a nickname occasionally attached to the club.

Volendam Hoog!In 1973 Volendam became the first Dutch football club to adopt sponsorship by joining forces with off-shore pirate radio station Radio Veronica. Their shirts displayed a large V superimposed over a small ship. This allowed for the vaguely plausible denial in the face of KNVB objection that the V stood for Volendam and not Veronica and the ship was a local fishing boat and not the boat transmitting Radio Veronica. Additionally Radio Veronica put together a compilation album called Volendam Hoog! (Volendam High!) with a team photo on the cover and featuring a number of popular Volendam bands of the day, the Cats, BZN and the spectacularly named Continental Uptight Band.

One unique aside about The Cats must be mentioned. The band were hugely popular in Holland in the 1970s and indeed during the 1974 World Cup the Dutch team listened to a tape of Cats songs in the bus on the way to each match. Holland stream-rolled through opponents on their way to the final. The tape was mysteriously lost on the day of the final and as you probably know Holland lost 2-1 to West Germany. Coincidence?

In the late 1970s the professional and amateur sections of RKSV Volendam parted ways, the professional side moving on as FC Volendam and the amateur section continuing as RKAV (Rooms Katholieke Amateur Voetbalvereniging) Volendam - Roman Catholic Amateur Football Club Volendam. RKAV still compete in the amateur ranks of Dutch football, currently members of the third-tier Hoofdklasse.

FC Volendam has a long tradition of youth development and has produced some top players over the years, the most famous being the Mühren brothers Arnold and Gerry. Their cousin Pé also happens to be the club's longtime PA announcer.

Major stadium improvements were made in the early 1990s and in 1993 the stadium was renamed to Veronica Stadion. Ten years later it was renamed again, this time under its current sponsor moniker Kras Stadion. Kras is a recycling company based in Volendam. For the 2006-07 season artifical turf was introduced, making it one of the very few football stadiums that does not utilize real grass.
