Founded on July 28, 1904 by workers of the Ferrocarril Oeste railway line. Matches with arch-rival Vélez Sársfield are called El Clásico del Oeste. Oeste means West, with the club based in the western part of Buenos Aires, specifically the Caballito neighborhood. Verdolaga is a salad green popular in many parts of Latin America. Its use as a nickname is a reference to the club's green color.
