Free State is the South African province in which the club is based. Makwane is the village where the club was originally founded. Qwa-Qwa was one of the bantustans during the apartheid area. Phuthaditjhaba (then Witsieshoek) was its capital. In the San language it means "whiter than white", a reference to the nearby snow-capped Drakensberg mountains. The town is now a part of Free State province. The club's franchise was revoked before the 2002-03 season as part of a reduction in the size of the Premier League. The club was revived for the 2003-04 season when the franchise of Maholosiane was purchased. The club's home matches are played in the city of Bethlehem.
