Full Name: Genoa Cricket and Football Club 1893 City: Genoa Founded: 1893 Stadium: Stadio Luigi Ferraris (40,122) Colors: Blue, Red Previous: Genoa Cricket & Athletic Club (1893-98), CC Genova (1929-45) Nicknames: Grifoni (The Griffons), Rossoblu (The Red and Blue) Rival: Sampdoria
Description:
Genoa were founded by English immigrants on September 7, 1893, with no Italians admitted until 1897. Genoa are the oldest existing football club in Italy. The club was originally formed to play cricket while the soccer section did not start until 1896. The Grifoni nickname is a reference to the Griffon found on the club's emblem. 1929-45 name change to Genova was a change forced upon the club by the Fascist government of the time, who disapproved of 'foreign' names. Genoa were one of the early powers of Italian football, winning 9 championships (including 6 of the first 7). However all of those titles came before the start of the national league format in 1929 and, apart from lower division titles, the trophy cabinet has been bare.
Stadio Luigi Ferraris:
The stadium is offically named for a former Genoa player, Luigi Ferraris, and commonly known by its location within the Marassi neighborhood of Genoa.
