Description:
The club was founded on April 1, 1911 but has adopted April 2, 1911 as the official foundation date to avoid 'April Fool's Jokes' by opposing fans. The club is named for the opera "Il Guarany" by the Brazilian composer Antônio Carlos Gomes, a native of Campinas. The opera is based on the novel of the same name by José de Alencar. One of the main characters was an Indian of the Guarani people. The stadium means 'Golden Earring of the Princess". The city of Campinas was known as the 'Princess of the West'. A journalist was asked to describe an early drawing of the planned stadium and he described it as an earring, a "Golden Earring for the Princess". Previous Stadiums: Ground da Villa Industrial (1911-13), Ground do Guanabara (1913-23), Estádio do Guarany (1923-53).
