Description:

By winning promotion to the 2008-09 English Premier League Hull City can finally put to rest a title they have unhappily held for many years - the largest city in Europe never to have hosted a top division club. After years and years of muddling along in this rugby league hotbed, a new stadium and solid financial backing have catapulted Hull City up the ladder of English football. The Tigers won successive promotions in 2003-04 and 2004-05 to reach the Football League Championship and last season finally made the jump to the top of the English game.

History:

Founded in 1904, Hull City began play at the Boulevard, home of rugby league club Hull FC. It would not be the last time the two clubs shared a ground. They briefly bounced around a couple other stadiums before making a move to the Anlaby Road ground, an area that their current stadium is actually built upon. The club had long targeted another location for a permanent ground and, after many, many hurdles (and two years of inactivity during World War II) the Tigers finally made the move to Boothferry Road in 1946. A regular series of financial crises ensued and the club was very close to going out of business on a few occasions. But hope of a permanently better future finally arrived in the form of the newly-built KC Stadium, which Hull City moved to in 2002 and share with Hull FC.
