Koninklijke (Royal) is an honorary title given by the Belgian royal family to every club in Belgium after twenty-five years of existence. The stadium is named for Jules Otten, one of the club's founders. The Buffalos nickname goes back to the early twentieth century - Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show paid several visits to the city of Ghent. Buffalo Bill was known for shouting "Buffaloes! Buffaloes!" to the crowd. Many of the regular attendees of the circus were also Gent supporters and gradually brought the "Buffaloes! Buffaloes!" chant with them to the matches to encourage their players. Before long it became the club's nickname and is even incorporated into the club's logo. Matricule# 7.
