Full Name: Sporting Kansas City City: Kansas City, MO Founded: 1996 Stadium: Community America Ballpark (12,000) Colors: Blue, White Previous Names: Kansas City Wiz (1996), Kansas City Wizards (1997-2010)
Description:
The Wiz name originally came to life following a month-long campaign in the Kansas City Star, asking fans to submit names for the new MLS franchise. Over 3,200 entries were received. (ed. not sure if that means 3200 votes or 3200 different names!). The team changed its name to the Kansas City Wizards after the 1996 season.. The lower-division Delaware Wizards previously owned exclusive rights to the Wizards name, but allowed Kansas City to use the name after the inauguaral season.
After the 2010 season the Kansas City Wizards went the rebranding route and changed their name to Sporting Kansas City.
Community America Ballpark:
The Wizards are using Community America Ballpark while Arrowhead Stadium undergoes renovations. It is normally a minor-league baseball stadium. The Wizards have also begun construction on a new soccer-specific stadium of their own, so may stay at Community America Ballpark until that opens, and not return to Arrowhead Stadium.
