Description:

Like all Belgian clubs Mechelen received the Royal honorific after 25 years of membership in the Belgian FA. Originally known by the French FC (and RFC) and by the French name of the city Malinois, they now use the Dutch name for both city and Koninklijke Voetbalklub (Royal Football Club). The Yellow Red aspect of the name was added after a financial restructuring in 2003. The malinwa nickname is a pun on the French version of the city name, which is pronounced the same. The stadium's nickname means 'behind the army barracks'. It was once a part of an army base. It is officially named for title sponsor Veolia, a French water and energy conglomerate. Matricule# 25.
