Description:

Founded in 1911 by a group of students at the 2nd men's high school, who named it in honor of the Bulgarian revolutionary hero Vasil Levski. Official registration was completed on May 24, 1914 and this by convention is the birthday of the club. The team originally played in a yellow-red stripe kit, but by 1920 blue was adopted as its new color. One of the most popular Sofia based clubs during the pre-war period, it was able to retain its following and even increase its fan base after the Soviet-inspired changes in society post WWII by becoming one of the few symbols of dissent with the new regime and the natural rival of CSKA, who were traditionally backed by the Red Army. The stadium is named for the icon of the club, Georgi Asparuhov (Gundi), who also excelled for the national team in the 1960s and tragically died in a car accident at a relatively young age. Have reached the European Cup Winners Cup and UEFA Cup quarterfinals twice each.
