Based in the western Bulgarian city of Pernik, Minyor (sometimes transliterated as Minior or Minjor) made their return to the A Group in 2008 after seven years in the wilderness. 2010-11 is Minyor Pernik's 37th season in the Bulgarian first division but despite all those years at the top they've yet to win a major trophy - a pair of 4th place finishes and a losing cup final appearance being the best they've done. The name Minyor translates to English as Miner, reflecting the importance of mining in the local economy.

Minyor's official foundation date is ambiguous (as with many Bulgarian clubs), ranging from 1919 to 1952 although 1944 seems the most logical. That year a club named Rudnichar was formed by the merger of several local Pernik clubs - Krakra, who competed in the first Bulgarian championship in 1924 (founded 1919), Svetkavitsa (1932), Benkovski (1936) and ZhSK (1941). Two years later, to celebrate the formation of the Republic of Bulgaria, Rudnichar was renamed to Republicanets-46. Another name change two years later to Torpedo then in 1952 to Minyor. These last two names reflect the name of one of the major industrial organizations in the company. In 1969 the Minyor industrial organization merged with Metalurg, another important industrial organization in Pernik, under the name Krakra Pernishki. The two football clubs of the same names completed the same merger. A year later the name was changed to Pernik and three years after that the name changed for the final time (so far) to Minyor. In 2001 Minyor again absorbed Metalurg (who had been relaunched in the years after their 1969 merger).

Both of the club's main nicknames - The Miners and the Hammers - unsurprisingly reflect the club and region's long relationship with mining.
