Description:

Motherwell FC were formed on May 17, 1886 by the merger of two local amateur sides based at local industrial factories, Glencairn and Alpha. Glencairn took their name from the owner of their factory, John Glencairn Carter Hamilton.  Alpha FC were first organized by workers at George Russell's Alpha Steam Crane and Engine Works. The club's Steelmen nickname is a reference to the Ravenscraig steelmill, which was very near their stadium and is also featured on the club logo. The club's colors were the racing colors of the previously-mentioned Baron Hamilton.
