Description:

The New York Red Bulls were originally known as Empire Soccer Club but changed to the NY/NJ MetroStars moniker before the first ball was kicked, a reference to the club's base in the New York Metro area. Based on the expectation of the club being called Empire Soccer Club, the Empire Supporters Club (the major supporters group for Red Bulls) evolved out of some earlier New York area fan groups - one from a semi-pro team called the New York Centaurs and the second from an email list called MLS-NY.In 2000 the team dropped NY/NJ and the name was simplified to just the MetroStars.

Just prior to the 2006 season, the MetroStars were purchased by Austrian drink maker Red Bull and the team was renamed to the New York Red Bulls. The team is also known as Red Bull New York and the two names seem to be used interchangeably. The New York Red Bulls' logo is based on that of the Red Bull drink, with the team name and a soccer ball added.

RBNY are not the only soccer team named Red Bull - the drink maker owns 3 other soccer teams. The first and most successful is Red Bull Salzburg in Austria, previously known as SV Austria Salzburg, who purchased and renamed the team in 2005. Incidentally a faction of Salzburg supporters rejected the takeover and formed a new fan-owned Austria Salzburg, who have climbed to the third tier of Austrian football.

Red Bull Arena:

Red Bull Arena opened in 2010, located in Harrison, NJ (just across the river from its much larger neighbor Newark). Harrison is just a short train ride from Manhattan.

Previous Stadium: Giants Stadium (1996-2009)
