Description:
Founded on January 1, 1890. Panionios means "Pan-Ionian". Ionia is the Greek name for the western region of modern-day Turkey where the club was originally located. The club was based in Smyrna (now Izmir, Turkey) and after the Greek/Turkish wars of the early 20th century, the club was reformed in Nea Smyrni (New Smyrna). Nea Smyrni is a suburb of Athens. The club was renamed in 2001 to avoid bankruptcy. Orfeas is Orpheus, the figure of Greek mythology.
