Poli were founded on April 27, 1945 by students of the local polytechnic university in the city of Iaşi, the third-largest city in Romania and the most important in the eastern region of Moldavia. Poli has been through a number of name changes and a pair of mergers - first in 1958 with CFR and second in 2001 with Unirea 2000. In both cases they adopted a different name for several years but eventually returned to the name Politehnica Iaşi.
