Description:

Portsmouth Football Club were formed in April 1898 as a successor to popular local club Royal Artillery who had recently been suspended by the FA. Portsmouth joined the Football League in 1920 after over twenty years in the Southern League. Portsmouth won two Southern League titles, 1902 and 1920. Pompey is the nickname of the city of Portsmouth. This is likely a reference to the time Portsmouth-based sailors scaled Pompey's Pillar in Alexandria, Egpyt although there are a variety of other explanations floating around. The star and crescent of the club's emblem are also the symbols of the city of Portsmouth.
