Description:

In 1919, a multisport club (l'Amical Sporting Club) is formed for the employees of the Casino grocery chain by its president Geoffroy Guichard. In 1928, becomes l'Association Sportive Stéphanoise. Adopted present name when the club turned professional. Green color was taken from that of Casino. Saint-Etienne is the French equivalent of St. Stephen, thus explaining the Stephanois nickname. Reached the European Cup final in 1976.
