Sint Truiden VV were formed February 23, 1924 as a merger of Union St.-Truiden and Gold Star St.-Truiden. The full name Koninklijke Sint-Truidense Voetbal Vereniging translates to English as the Royal Football Association of Sint-Truiden. Koninklijke (Royal) is an honorary title given by the Belgian royal family to every club in Belgium after twenty-five years of existence. The nickname De Kanaries (The Canaries) is a reference to the club's yellow colors. Yellow and blue are the principal colors of the flag of the city of St.-Truiden. The two-headed eagle in STVV's logo can also be seen in the coat of arms of the city of Sint Truiden.

St Truiden VV have matricule #373. Belgian football clubs are given a sequential foundation number at the time of their foundation called a matricule. The smaller the number, the older the club and 373 is relatively small.

Their best ever finish in the Belgian First Division is second place, which they achieved in the 1965-66 season.

Stayen:

Stayen means 'stadium' in the Sint-Truiden dialect. The spelling officially changed in 2008 from the old Staaien. It opened in 1927.
