Description:Founded on May 13, 1905 by a Brazilian (Guilherme de Aquino) who had lived in England for many years, thus the English name of the club. Like so many football clubs in Brazil, Sport Recife are a multi-sports club that also complete in basketball, handball, etc. The club's 1987 title is a controversial one as the country's biggest clubs (Clube dos 13) competed in a separate tournament that season, the Copa União. The derby with Náutico is called the Clássico dos Clássicos (they are the two oldest clubs in Recife) while the derby with Santa Cruz is the Clássico das Multidões (they are the two most popular clubs in Recife). The stadium is officiallly named for a former club president while its common name (Ilha do Retiro) is that of the neighborhood in which it is located.
