Description:

Hellenic were formed by Greek immigrants in Cape Town in the late 1950s. They played at the local level before going professional in the 1970s. The franchise of Hellenic FC was purchased in January 2004. At the time Hellenic were in the Premier Division while Premier United (as they were then known) were in the First Division. The club kept the Hellenic name for the remainder of that season and also the 2004-05 season before becoming Benoni Premier United.

After the 2006-07 season the club was purchased by the Thanda business group (a Swedish-South African consortium) and moved from Benoni to Durban. In October 2007 the club was renamed Thanda Royal Zulu FC. Thanda Royal Zulu is a game preserve and the name is also used by permission of the Zulu king.

In 2010 the club moved to the town of Richards' Bay to became tenants at the newly-built uMhlathuze Sports Stadium. Thanda Royal Zulu are now the first professional club based in Zululand.

The nickname Amabhubesi means Lions in the Zulu language.

The uMhlathuze Sports Stadium is part of a larger uMhlathuze Sports Complex in the town of Richards' Bay. It was used as a training camp by Nigeria during the 2010 World Cup.

Hi Sihle

It depends on how you look at it. The club's origins go back to 1970 when they were created with the name Premier United. In 2007 they were sold to Thanda and renamed Thanda Royal Zulu.

So, either 1970 or 2007. :)
